"Recoding our Education System"

I found this article to be incredibly interesting,  By teaching children at young ages to understand and to be able to use HTML it provides the students with critical thinking, group collaboration and problem solving skills.  Through the use of the program SCRATCH students were able to solve glitches in their coding, create animations that would then teach other students how to learn what they learned.
This is related to the NETS through customizing learning to code HTML into other areas of schooling.  Through learning computational thinking do students learn that coding is like crossword puzzles and other events in life.  One wrong word or the wrong action, can prevent the whole unit from working or land you in troublesome situations.  This forces students to reflect upon collaborative moments in order to implement those social skills into real life situations.
I wonder what the affects would beo n education and future generations if this lesson plan was carried out through all grade levels by incorporating coding into subjects such as Math and History.  Perhaps then I might do a little better in Math however most likely not.

  1. This seems like a very interesting idea, yet I am still unclear on exactly how it would be carried out in the classroom. While I can see the merit in Math or Science, it is unclear how writing code would assist in the areas of English and History. If the objective is to capture the imaginations of those that may pursue a career in technology, then there may be merit. However, what happens if there are not enough resources to carry out such programs? Funding can be a very big issue, especially if trying to use technology to such extents. Another question that arises, who would be delivering the instruction on such programs? As a future teacher, I would not appreciate it if I was required to learn computer coding in addition to mastering the art of teaching and the material in my field of expertise. That being said, the idea is definitely interesting and thought provoking, and may truly highlight a bias I have towards technology.
